VICTIM(S): ARCO Gas Station
SUMMARY: On Friday, October 25, 2004, at approximately 12:00 p.m., deputies from the Yucaipa Police Department responded to the ARCO gas station in reference to a theft. Deputies learned two suspects entered an employee area of the business. The suspects were observed attempting to steal multiple cases of cigarettes. An employee confronted the suspects and attempted to retrieve the property. The suspects stole two cases of cigarettes containing 600 packs valued at over $6,000. The suspects fled the business in a gray Tesla vehicle.
Through investigation, deputies located the suspect vehicle at an apartment complex in the unincorporated area of Bloomington. Deputies attempted a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle, which immediately fled the area at a high rate of speed. San Bernardino County Sheriff's Aviation Division assisted in the incident and followed the suspect vehicle as it traveled west on the I-10 freeway at speeds in excess of 100 mph. The suspect vehicle exited the freeway in Ontario and dropped off a second person and a toddler near the Ontario Mills Mall. Deputies located and detained the passenger with the toddler.
The suspect vehicle continued to flee east on the I-10 freeway and exited onto Cherry Avenue in Fontana. Fontana Police located the vehicle as it fled into a local business parking lot. Fontana Police were able to locate and detain the driver, Vontray Britt, who fled on foot. The two cases of stolen cigarettes were recovered inside the suspect vehicle.
Vontray Britt was arrested and booked at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga for the above charges. The adult passenger in the vehicle was determined to be uninvolved in the theft. The investigation is ongoing to identify the second robbery suspect.
