THE SIMI VALLEY POLICE DEPARTMENT URGES DRIVERS TO USE CAUTION IN SCHOOL ZONES FOLLOWING A STUDENT BEING STRUCK IN THE CROSSWALK
Earlier today a student was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street to the front of Hillside Middle School.
On October 29, 2024, at approximately 8:00 AM, a vehicle traveling eastbound Fitzgerald Rd. ran the red light at the intersection of Whitcomb Ave. and Fitzgerald Rd. The vehicle struck a Hillside Middle School student while the student was crossing the street southbound in the crosswalk. The student was taken to the hospital and later released with no serious injuries and returned to school that morning.
As a reminder, The Simi Valley Police Department urges all drivers to use caution and adhere to traffic laws around schools. The speed limit in school zones during school hours when children are present is 25 mph unless otherwise posted, and increased awareness is crucial to prevent further incidents.
With increased traffic levels around schools, drivers must stay alert, reduce their speeds, and be prepared to stop at crosswalks. School zones are clearly marked with signs, and the Simi Valley Police Department have been and will continue to enforce speed limits to protect students and school staff. Violators may face fines and other penalties as part of our commitment to keep students safe.
Today’s incident underscores the critical importance of school zone safety. We strongly urge all drivers to slow down, obey posted speed limits, and be vigilant for children crossing the street, especially during school hours.
Drivers are also reminded to remain cautious of school buses loading and unloading, crossing guards, and increased pedestrian activity around schools. Let’s work together to ensure a safe journey to and from school for every student in our community.
