2024 Halloween Safety Tips from your Cranbury Township Police Department.

As Halloween 2024 is upon us, Chief Michael J. Owens and the Cranbury Township Police Department would like to remind all families and friends of several important safety tips as they prepare to take their children Trick-Or-Treating this year throughout the Township of Cranbury.

Chief Owens is quoted as saying, "On behalf of the entire Cranbury Township Police Department, we want to make sure our residents and guests alike have a happy and most importantly, a safe 2024 Halloween day and night! We ask that all who participate, follow these simple safety guidelines to help ensure that everyone in our community remains safe."

Children Should:
- Wear clothing that is bright and reflective.
- Use flashlights for guidance on walkways, sidewalks and when crossing streets.
- Practice safe street crossing by using crosswalks and walk signals where available.
- Only approach well-lit homes and always travel in groups, never alone.
- Wear sturdy shoes and temperature appropriate clothing with or without a costume.

Parents Should:
- Supervise all children, especially 12 years old or younger.
- Establish a designated curfew for older children.
- Have children wear flashing reflector lights on belt loops or on bag handles, as the blinking light provides added visibility.
- Make sure children are wearing safe costumes that fit well and do not drag so as to get caught on the ground.
- Assure costume accessories such as swords and other pointed objects are made with soft and safe materials.

Homeowners Should:
- Keep inside and outside lights on during your designated Trick-Or-Treat hours.
- Avoid placing lit candles and Jack-O-Lanterns on doorsteps and walkways where children in costumes could brush against.
- Avoid handing out small toys that could cause choking or be tainted with lead.
- Only hand out candy that is wrapped and packaged.

Lastly, any signs of suspicious persons or vehicles should immediately be reported to the Cranbury Township Police Department by calling (609) 395-0031 OR by dialing 9-1-1 in an emergency.  Extra Police Officers and Crossing Guards will be deployed throughout the township until 8:30 pm or so.

Happy and Safe 2024 Halloween to all!
