The information provided is preliminary and subject to change.

On Wednesday, November 6, 2024, just before 10:00 p.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Southeast District officers were in the 200 block of S. Gladstone Avenue on a report of a person armed. Dispatch notified responding officers that a female caller reported that she was being held against her will while being held at gunpoint inside a home.

Officers arrived in the area and encountered the adult female caller near the intersection of Brookville Road and South Gladstone Avenue. The female victim told officers that the male suspect threatened her with a firearm inside the home and told her that he would kill her if she attempted to leave. The female stated that the suspect was still inside the home and armed with a firearm.

Using time, distance, communication, and barriers, officers requested additional resources to respond to the scene. That included a Southeast District detective, the IMPD SWAT team, and IMPD negotiators. Officers established a perimeter around the home and began continuous announcements on a public address (PA) system, asking the suspect to exit peacefully. Those attempts were unsuccessful.

Detectives applied for and were granted a search warrant to enter the home and place the suspect under arrest. Officers continued announcements and negotiations for over an hour, while the suspect remained inside the home armed with a firearm. SWAT officers deployed a less-lethal flashbang inside the home as an irritant and distraction technique. The suspect still did not exit. SWAT officers then attempted to force entry through the front door and were fired upon by the suspect numerous times.

SWAT officers then relocated away from the home and continued PA announcements and additional deployments of tear gas in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. The suspect fired several shots in the direction of officers throughout the incident.

After about six hours of negotiations and the de-escalation techniques, the suspect was taken into custody without further issues.  A firearm was located inside the home (photo attached). The handgun’s serial number has been blurred to protect the integrity of the investigation.

The female caller was checked out by medics on-scene and did not appear to have any injuries. No other uninvolved residents or officers were injured during this incident.

Multiple officers were equipped with body-worn cameras, which were activated during this incident.

“I am incredibly proud of the IMPD officers who bravely put themselves in harm's way to protect our neighbors and community. Their remarkable restraint and professionalism were key in resolving the situation peacefully," said Chief Chris Bailey.

The suspect, 45-year-old Al McGhee, was arrested on preliminary charges of criminal recklessness (misdemeanor), intimidation with a deadly weapon (felony), and pointing a firearm (felony).  The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO) will make the final charging decisions.

Detectives are confident there is no ongoing threat to the community. There is no suspect outstanding.

The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct the criminal investigation.
