Join the Tewksbury Township Committee for a Presentation on the 2024 Tewksbury Earthquake Activity.
Tuesday November 12, 2024 7:30pm at Oldwick Manor 2 Fisher Road Whitehouse Station, NJ (Behind the Firehouse)
On April 5, 2024, 10:23 a.m., a magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck Tewksbury Township, New Jersey, about 65 km west of New York City. Millions of people from Virginia to Maine and beyond felt the ground shaking, resulting in the largest number of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports of any earthquake. A team, led by the Speaker, Dr.Sissy Nikolaou, deployed by the Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) Association and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) documented structural and nonstructural damage, followed by teams by the USGS who installed strong motion recording instruments in the epicentral area to capture aftershocks. The speaker will discuss:
Selected observations from this event, including the community’s perception of an earthquake.
The unique geologic setting in our area and what we know about earthquakes here.
The basis and philosophy of applicable design codes to our region.
Updates on the just-released plan of post-earthquake scientific and engineering investigations by the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP).
Ways to improve preparedness and response to future earthquakes.
