WEST SPRINGFIELD TO CONNECT FIRST MUNICIPAL FIBER CUSTOMERS NEXT WEEK

West Springfield, MA:  The Town of West Springfield will be connecting its first municipal fiber customers next week.  In a partnership with Westfield Gas & Electric/Whip City Fiber, West Springfield has been building the infrastructure for a municipally owned fiber network, that will have its first customer connected on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.

The first customer to be connected will be CHD’s Cancer House of Hope, located at 1999 Westfield Street, West Springfield.  West Springfield and Whip City Fiber will host an event there at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 20.  Following the event at the Cancer House of Hope, a ribbon cutting event will take place at West Springfield’s first fiber hut, located at 1695 Westfield Street, West Springfield.

The first connection is the culmination of several years of collaboration between West Springfield and Whip City Fiber.  West Springfield initially piloted the fiber project in four fiber service areas in the southwest corner of town.  The first of these four pilot areas will be connected this month, with the other three to follow shortly thereafter.  Since the inception of the plan, Town residents voted overwhelmingly to approve the project and it has been expanded to a Town-wide network buildout.

“Today marks a significant moment in West Side’s growth and future,” commented Mayor Will Reichelt. “Connecting our first customers to the municipally owned fiber network is not just about faster internet—it’s about expanding opportunities for education, business, and innovation. This is a step toward bridging the digital divide and ensuring that every resident has access to the tools they need to succeed in the modern world. We’re excited for what the future holds as we continue to invest in the infrastructure that will power our community for generations to come.”
