Fire Update 8pm

Today’s burnout operations made inroads on the fire, with a tactical effort on the ground and in the air. Dozens of volunteer crews were led by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) Forest Rangers. Two Chinook and two Blackhawk helicopters from New York Army National Guard were part of today’s efforts.

There was more visible fire and smoke today, due to the planned burnout operations.

The helicopters dropped 118 buckets of water. The Chinooks drop up to 2,000 gallons from each bucket drop. The Blackhawk helicopters drop approximately 600 gallons from each bucket drop. Today, they dropped 170,000 gallons of water.

More than 300 firefighters from six state agencies as well as dozens of volunteer fire companies were on suppression efforts today.

The fire has burned 4,756 acres and is now 69% contained.

There are currently no evacuations in place and no structures in immediate risk. As fire suppression continues, there will be smoke and particulate matter in the air. If you have respiratory issues or know someone that does and you encounter these conditions, please call the Tuxedo Police at 845-351-5111 or call 911. We have acquired temporary shelter if needed.

The Jennings Creek Wildfire continues to exist primarily in the Sterling Forest State Park and is boxed in by fire lines. The park’s visitor center, lakefront area and historic furnace area is open but all activities in the woodlands area remain closed including hunting.

Additional support continues to arrive from throughout New York State. Tomorrow, a team of  wildland firefighters from Montana and Colorado will join the efforts.

Residents are encouraged to continue to abide by the current statewide and local burn ban in effect to prevent additional wildfires from occurring.

We encourage all to share this information and continue to follow local official accounts for the most up to date and accurate information including the New York State Park Police Facebook account which will sending out the most up-to-date and verified information regarding the Jennings Fire.
