Fire lines held last night. The visible fire overnight was part of the burnout operations and was within the fire line. Volunteer crews led by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) Forest Rangers worked throughout the night. Burnout operations will continue throughout the day today, leading to more visible fire and smoke, and an increase in acreage, likely in the hundreds of acres.
Nearly 300 firefighters from six state agencies as well as dozens of volunteer fire companies will be on suppression efforts today.
Additional support continues to arrive from throughout New York State, plus wildland firefighters from Colorado and Montana.
The Jennings Creek wildfire is primarily in the Sterling Forest State Park and is boxed in by fire lines. The park’s visitor center, lakefront area, and historic furnace area continues to remain open but all activities in the woodlands area remain closed, including hunting.
Residents are encouraged to continue to abide by the current statewide burn ban issued by Governor Hochul to prevent additional wildfires from occurring. To reduce fire danger, residents are encouraged to remove leaves and debris from areas close to their homes.
Please avoid the Long Meadow Rd. area if possible. If you must travel in that vicinity, please exercise caution and slow your speed when in proximity of firefighting operations. Thank you!
