ATTENTION RESIDENTS: PROTECT YOURSELF FROM HOME IMPROVEMENT SCAMS

ATTENTION RESIDENTS: PROTECT YOURSELF FROM HOME IMPROVEMENT SCAMS
The Village of Mamaroneck Police Department is issuing a warning to all homeowners regarding home improvement scams targeting residents in our area. These scams involve dishonest contractors or individuals posing as legitimate service providers who offer home repair or renovation services. Once hired, these scammers often take advantage of unsuspecting homeowners, resulting in financial loss or substandard work.
Common Scam Tactics:

  1. Unsolicited Offers & Door-to-Door Sales: Scammers frequently show up uninvited, offering "special deals" or claiming they noticed issues with your home that need immediate attention, such as roof damage or foundation problems. They often pressure homeowners into making quick decisions.
  2. "Too Good to Be True" Prices: Fraudulent contractors may offer incredibly low prices for large projects, but once the work begins, they may demand significantly more money, citing hidden costs or "unexpected complications."
  3. Advance Payment Scams: Many scammers require large upfront payments before beginning the work. Once paid, they may disappear without completing the job or may provide subpar or incomplete services.
  4. Fake or Altered Credentials: Some scammers may present fake or altered business licenses, insurance, and other credentials to appear legitimate. Always verify these documents with the appropriate local authorities.
  5. Pressure Tactics & Urgency: Scammers often create a sense of urgency, telling homeowners that work needs to be done immediately to avoid costly damage or safety issues. This is designed to rush you into making decisions without taking the time to check their credentials.
  6. Target the Elderly: Scammers will look for homes that need some repair and are occupied by the elderly and then will pressure them to make home improvements.

How to Protect Yourself:
  • Verify Credentials: Always check a contractor’s credentials, including licensing and insurance, through the relevant local agencies. Don’t rely on documents provided by the contractor alone.
  • Get Multiple Estimates: Always get at least three written estimates before hiring any contractor. Be wary of unusually low or high estimates.
  • Don’t Pay Upfront: Avoid paying large sums upfront. Legitimate contractors typically require a deposit but will not ask for full payment before the work is completed.
  • Contract in Writing: Ensure that all terms of the agreement, including costs, timelines, and scope of work, are clearly outlined in a written contract. Never accept verbal agreements.
  • Check References & Reviews: Ask for references and check online reviews for feedback from previous customers. If a contractor has no online presence or cannot provide reliable references, consider that a red flag.
  • Contact Authorities if You Suspect a Scam: If you believe you have encountered a scam, contact the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department. Do not allow the individual to continue work or return to your home.

REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY:
If you suspect a home improvement scam or have encountered an unlicensed or suspicious contractor, contact the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department at 914-777-1122. You may also file a report with your state’s consumer protection agency.
Your safety and the quality of your home improvements matter. Don't fall victim to scams. Stay vigilant and protect yourself.
