Scam Alert: Warning that scam attempts are on the rise. 
Various scams have re-emerged in Beaufort County to include fraudsters impersonating law enforcement officers.
Local law enforcement has received an increasing number of scam calls in our area. This includes the Sheriff's Office receiving several reports of individuals impersonating Sheriff's Office deputies and demanding payments for missing jury duty or some other legal obligation.
As a reminder, the Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement agencies do not accept payment for fines and penalties related to criminal matters nor will we solicit payment over the phone. No legitimate business or law enforcement agency will ask for payment in the form of Cryptocurrency, bitcoin, gift cards or wire transfers. They will also never ask or direct you to keep these payments secret from your financial institutions or family.
Do not feel pressured or rushed to give money or access to your financial accounts. If you received a call from a scammer, simply hang up. If you feel you have been a victim of a scam, call our Non-Emergency dispatch line at 843-524-2777.
