Notice of Outfall Screening in East Chicago Waterways
From now through June 2025, Butler, Fairman & Seufert, on behalf of the City of East Chicago, will be conducting outfall screenings to inspect pipes and other conveyances discharging into the City’s waterways.
To complete the screenings, field staff will walk along, work within, and kayak through various waterways throughout the City. These activities are best conducted during the winter months when vegetation is dormant, allowing for easier access to the water.
This effort includes an assessment of the Grand Calumet River, Indiana Harbor Canal, Lake George Canal, and the Lake Michigan Shoreline. The purpose of this work is to protect the quality of East Chicago’s waterways and maintain compliance with the Indiana Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) General Permit.
Access to public easements near waterways may be necessary. Nearby properties will be notified if access is required.
Thank you for your understanding as we work to complete this requirement.
