SUSPECT(S): 16-year-old male of Apple Valley
SUMMARY:
On Saturday, October 6, 2024, Deputy A. Montanez saw a male subject outside Cost Less Market & Liquor waving towards him and pointing to subjects who were running towards a vehicle. Deputy Montanez, believing a crime had occurred, followed the vehicle as it was leaving the business. Deputy Montanez pursued the vehicle with his lights and sirens on for approximately three miles before terminating the pursuit due to the cloud dust which made following the suspect vehicle difficult. During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle also hit another vehicle at an intersection, causing minor damage. No one was injured during the accident.
Deputy Montanez returned to the business and learned three male juvenile suspects had attempted to steal alcohol from the business by concealing cans of alcohol in their clothing. When the suspects were approached by the employee, they discarded the cans and fled from the store. One male juvenile pushed the employee to the ground, and another punched the employee while he was on the ground.
Several days later, Deputy Montanez conducted follow up on this case. It was learned that at approximately 7:29 am the same day of the attempted shoplifting and pursuit, a citizen called to report their vehicle stolen. The reported stolen vehicle matched the description of the vehicle which fled the scene of the assault and shoplifting and which was pursued by Deputy Montanez.
Deputy Montanez’ investigation revealed the 16-year-old male juvenile of Apple Valley resided at the location where the vehicle had been reported stolen. The investigation led to the 16-year-old male being arrested for felony evading, assault and shoplifting. The juvenile and his parent were cited into juvenile court for these offenses.
