Police Arrest Somerville Man for Aggravated Assault Against a Police Officer

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr. reports the arrest of Wyatt Bowden, 18, of Somerville, in connection with an incident of aggravated assault against a Police Officer on Sunday, November 24, 2024.

“This arrest should put daredevil drivers on alert that the streets of Newark are completely off-limits to anyone planning to drag race or showcase their hazardous driving stunts here,” Director Miranda said. “Sadly, a Newark Police Officer was injured during this incident. But innocent pedestrians and other drivers could have been hurt by this group of careless drivers, who also put themselves in danger.”

At approximately 1:02 a.m., Police responded to Frelinghuysen Avenue and Miller Street on a call of erratic drivers in the area. Upon the arrival of responding officers, individuals at the scene began to flee, both on foot and in vehicles. While also attempting to flee, Wyatt Bowden drove his vehicle over the foot of a Newark Police Officer. The officer was transported to University Hospital for treatment and is reportedly in stable condition.

Police apprehended Bowden, who faces charges of aggravated assault upon a police officer, eluding, and possession of a weapon (auto).

Newark Police Detectives are continuing their investigation to identify other suspects involved.

These charges are merely accusations. This suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. #newarknj #publicsafety #police #community #partnership #newjersey #cops
