WEST SPRINGFIELD SEEKS VOLUNTEERS FOR VARIOUS BOARDS AND COMMITTEES
West Springfield, MA: The Town of West Springfield is seeking volunteers to serve on various boards and committees that act in an advisory capacity regarding certain activities within Town government. The following boards and committees have vacant positions that are available to interested volunteers:

Arts Council - Two (2) Vacancies – Responsible for overseeing the disbursement of grant funding from the Mass Cultural Council to promote excellence, education, diversity, and inclusion in the arts, humanities, and sciences to foster a rich cultural life for all residents.

Board of Appeals (Zoning) – Two (2) Vacancies (Alternate Members) – Responsible for interpreting and applying the Town’s Zoning Ordinance and rendering decisions in accordance with the Zoning Ordinance and the Massachusetts Zoning Act, M.G.L. c. 40A. Alternate members participate when regular members are unavailable.

Community Preservation Act Committee – One (1) Vacancy – Reviews applications for and makes recommendations to the Town Council for funding of projects using Community Preservation Act Funds.

Conservation Commission – Two (2) Vacancies – The conservation commission is charged with the protection of West Springfield’s natural resources. All projects that fall within the jurisdiction of the Conservation Commission are reviewed by the Commission to ensure that impact to any resource areas is minimized.

Council on Aging - One (1) Vacancy – Coordinates and carries out programs designed to meet the problems of the aging in coordination with programs of the Council for the Aging (Senior Center).

Historical Commission – Two (2) Vacancies (Alternate Members) – Responsible for the preservation, protection and development of the historical or archeological assets of West Springfield. Alternate members participate when regular members are unavailable.

Library Board of Trustees – One (1) Vacancy – Act in an advisory capacity to the Mayor and the Library Director on matters related to library policies, objectives and strategic goals and advising on community needs.

Public Safety Commission – One (1) Vacancy – Advises the Mayor and the Chiefs regarding hiring and promotional decisions in the police and fire departments and makes recommendations related to priorities and policies of each public safety department.

Tree and Urban Forest Committee – One (1) Vacancy – Works with Town officials to improve the health of the urban and community forest through tree plantings, advocacy, education, management and maintenance activities; assists with education campaigns, bringing additional resources into the community for Town trees and forests; and applies for grants.

Veterans Advisory Board – Three (3) Vacancies – Organizes and implements the Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day activities; sets nomination criteria and vetting procedures for formal recognition of the Town's “Veteran of the Year” and promotes and assists in other patriotic events and activities in the Town during each year. Members of this board must be veterans or be a member in good standing of a recognized nongovernmental support organization (“NGSO”) that provides support for residents of the Town, or be a Gold Star family member.
