IMPD Officer Arrested for Domestic Battery

INDIANAPOLIS – An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officer has been arrested for domestic battery.

On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, the Whiteland Police Department responded to the home of IMPD Officer Herman Means following a report of domestic violence. During the investigation, officers determined the complainant had been battered and restrained.

Means was placed under arrest for preliminary charges of one count of domestic battery and one count of strangulation. The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision.

When it was discovered that one of the involved parties was an off-duty IMPD officer, detectives from IMPD’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) were contacted. SIU will provide assistance if requested during the investigation.

Officer Means is a 7-year-veteran of IMPD and is assigned to East District. Means is currently being held at the Johnson County Jail.

When he is released, he will be placed on administrative leave pending an internal review of the incident. IMPD has collected all of his department-issued equipment and Means’s police authority has been suspended.

IMPD Internal Affairs will conduct an administrative investigation to assess potential departmental violations and present the findings to the Chief of Police for review.

As with any person arrested, Means should be considered innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Anyone experiencing domestic violence is encouraged to get help and/or resources and support by calling the Coburn Place Safe Heaven at 1-800-566-2632 or visiting Coburnplace.org.
