Non-Fatal Officer Involved Critical Incident

San Mateo, CA – On November 30, 2024, at 4:00 a.m., San Mateo and Burlingame Police Officers were involved in an officer involved shooting.  The incident occurred near the intersection of Bayswater Avenue and Myrtle Road in Burlingame.

San Mateo Police Department received a 911 call at 02:53 a.m., regarding possible gunshots near the 800 block of North San Mateo Drive.  When officers arrived on scene, they contacted an adult male walking near the intersection of Jefferson Court and State Street.  After being contacted by police, the male suspect pointed a firearm at police officers then started to run northbound on Jefferson Court.  The officers fearing for their lives, got out of the line of fire and requested additional police officers to respond to the scene, then chased after the suspect.

Officers lost sight of the suspect at the intersection of Jefferson Court and Peninsula Avenue.  A Burlingame Police Officer located the suspect near the intersection of Bayswater Avenue and Myrtle Road.  The suspect was holding a firearm and standing in the middle of the street yelling.

San Mateo Police Officers responded to the location.  San Mateo and Burlingame Police Officers tried to de-escalate the situation and gave commands to the suspect.  The suspect did not comply with any commands given to him by officers.  An officer discharged a less-lethal rubber projectile at the suspect to get the suspect to drop his firearm, however this was also ineffective.  One San Mateo Police Officer and one Burlingame Police Officer discharged their service weapons at the suspect.  The suspect was struck by gun fire and fell to the ground.

Officers were able to approach the suspect and secure the loaded firearm that was in his possession.  The firearm was a 45 caliber Glock pistol.  Officers provided medical aid to the suspect.  The suspect was transported to a local hospital and is currently in stable condition.

With any officer involved critical incident, San Mateo County protocol is followed.  There are three concurrent, independent investigations that take place.

The first investigation focuses on the force response and is conducted independently by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.

The second investigation focuses on the suspects’ crimes and is conducted by the San Mateo Police Department.

The third investigation is administrative to ensure the officer acted within policy.  The San Mateo and Burlingame Police Departments are conducting these administrative investigations of the officer involved shooting as it relates to each department’s policy and procedures.  These investigations are currently ongoing.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office continues to investigate the officer involved shooting and is the point of contact for media inquiries regarding the shooting.

Following protocol in all officer involved critical incidents, the involved officers were placed on administrative leave and they will remain on leave while the District Attorney’s Office conducts its investigation.
