Media Release

Hawaiʻi Island police have arrested and charged 39-year-old Joshua Allen Sheen, of Kurtistown, with abuse of a family or household member and an array of firearms and drug offenses.

On Tuesday afternoon, December 3, 2024, upon conferral with the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, detectives from the Area I Juvenile Aid Section charged Sheen with the following offenses:

  • Three counts of ownership or possession firearm prohibited
  • Two counts of ownership or possession ammunition prohibited
  • Two counts of mandatory registration of a firearm
  • Possession of prohibited weapons
  • Alteration of identification marks prohibited
  • Abuse family household member
  • Second-degree terroristic threatening
  • Third-degree promoting a detrimental drug

Sheen’s total bail was set at $290,000. He remains in police custody pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, December 4, 2024, in Hilo District Court.

The charges against Sheen stem from an incident reported on Monday morning, December 2, 2024, where the 29-year-old victim walked into the Hilo Police Station and reported being involved in a domestic argument earlier in the morning, where Sheen threw a bowl at her, striking her forehead and causing pain. Sheen also reportedly threatened to harm her and damage her property, which led her to fear for her safety. The victim also disclosed that Sheen possesses unregistered firearms at their 38th Avenue residence, in Kurtistown. It was subsequently determined that Sheen is prohibited from owning or possessing firearms.

Sheen was arrested without incident later Monday morning, at 10:40 a.m., when he walked into the Pahoa Police Station to speak with an officer about an unrelated matter. During the arrest, officers recovered Sheen's vehicle as evidence after observing what appeared to be a glass smoking pipe and marijuana inside.

On Monday evening, December 2, 2024, a search warrant was executed at the residence in Kurtistown, where detectives recovered two unregistered rifles and an altered shotgun, which was later determined to have been stolen in an unrelated incident. Additionally, 530 rounds of .22 caliber ammunition and 30 rounds of 20-gauge shotgun ammunition were seized.

On Tuesday morning, December 3, 2024, a search warrant was executed on Sheen’s vehicle, where 10.07 grams of processed marijuana was recovered.

Detectives continue to investigate the stolen shotgun and will refer the case to the prosecutor’s office upon completion of the investigation.

Anyone who may have information regarding either of these incidents is asked to call Acting Detective Corey Kaneko of the Area I Juvenile Aid Section, at (808) 961-8843 or via email at [email protected].
