Tsunami Warning Follow-Up Message
Yesterday, two powerful earthquakes struck off the coast of Northern California, triggering a tsunami warning for our region, issued by the National Weather Service. Shortly thereafter, the tsunami warning was lifted.
In response, the City of Newark’s leadership team, emergency services coordinator, and representatives from the City Manager’s Office, Community Development, Alameda County Fire, Human Resources, IT, Police, Public Works, and Recreation and Community Services swiftly mobilized to implement an emergency response plan while closely monitoring updates from the National Weather Service.
Our team was fully prepared to take immediate action, identifying a potential relief shelter, and ensuring resources were available for residents who may have been affected. We are appreciative of the prompt coordination and response from our staff and are grateful that the tsunami warning was ultimately rescinded.
City staff regularly train in emergency response, ensuring we are always prepared for situations like this. We remain alert, continuing to monitor all updates in case of any future emergencies that could impact our community. It is important to note that all city employees are designated as disaster service workers and are always ready to respond if needed.
Thank you to the concerned residents who contacted our dispatch center for your attentiveness in seeking further information. We also extend our gratitude for trusting our city staff during this brief moment of uncertainty. Your cooperation and understanding are greatly appreciated.
