Important Letter from Mayor Halpern and Chief McGovern regarding Drone Activity
To the Residents of Fair Haven,
We want to address recent concerns about drone activity reported in our area and beyond. While we currently do not have answers regarding this activity, please know that we are taking the situation seriously and prioritizing the safety and well-being of our community.
Throughout New Jersey and other states, there have been sightings of groups of drones—typically two to six—operating between 6:00 PM and midnight. These drones are large, approximately 6-7 feet in diameter, capable of staying airborne for several hours. Some have been observed with lights turning on and off, operating outside standard frequencies, and entering restricted airspaces.
Federal agencies, including the FBI, Coast Guard, and Department of Homeland Security, are actively investigating this matter. Surveillance equipment is being deployed to better track these drones, and operations are expected to begin shortly. While we have been assured there is no known threat at this time, we are working closely with state and federal partners to monitor the situation.
It’s important to note that deactivating or “de-droning” these devices is a federal responsibility. Please do not attempt to disable a drone with a firearm or by any other means that could pose a risk to you or others. Local, county, and state officials are monitoring the situation, but any action against these drones must come from federal authorities.
If you spot a suspicious drone:
• Report it immediately by emailing [email protected] or calling the Fair Haven Police Department at 732-747-0991.
• DO NOT call 911 unless the drone poses an immediate danger or crashes.
We encourage anyone with ongoing concerns to contact their federal representatives, as their support and action are critical to addressing this issue comprehensively. We will continue to work with our partners and will inform you as more information becomes available.
Thank you for your vigilance and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Mayor Josh Halpern and Chief Joseph P. McGovern
