Debris Removal Efforts Continue in McDowell County
As of December 12, 2024, AshBritt and USACE have collected a total of 28,567.3 cubic yards of storm debris and 5,057.14 tons of soil in McDowell County. Crews are working seven days a week across all zones to expedite debris removal and recovery efforts. Current operations include mud, soil, and silt removal in Old Fort (Zone B) and North Cove (Zone E), ROW truck allocations in Crooked Creek (Zone A), Old Fort (Zone B), Glenwood (Zones F and G), Marion (Zone I), and Nebo (Zone K), and tree and debris separation crews actively working in Crooked Creek (Zone A), Glenwood (Zone G), and Sugar Hill (Zone H). The collected debris is being directly hauled to Waste Management facilities to ensure timely disposal. Farmers, Ranch Hands May Be Eligible for FEMA Assistance
North Carolina farmers and ranch hands impacted by Tropical Storm Helene may qualify for FEMA disaster assistance to replace essential tools and equipment necessary for their work or self-employment. Eligible items include disaster-damaged tools, supplies, and equipment such as tractors, plows, seeders, harvesters, utility vehicles, and more, provided they are not covered by insurance and meet specific eligibility requirements. Ranch hands may also apply if these items are required by their employer. Additional resources for assistance may be available through the U.S. Small Business Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The deadline to apply is January 7, 2024. To apply, visit DisasterAssistance.gov, use the FEMA app, or call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. For in-person help, visit a Disaster Recovery Center, open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
