Driving Under the Influence and Driver's License Checkpoint Happening Tonight

The Santa Clara Police Department is conducting a Driving Under the Influence / Driver's License checkpoint at an undisclosed location within the City of Santa Clara tonight, Wednesday, December 18, beginning at approximately 8 p.m. through Thursday, December 19 at approximately 1 a.m.

The primary purpose of these checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road. DUI/Driver's License checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes and are conducted by strict legal guidelines to protect the rights of motorists. These guidelines require law enforcement agencies to provide advance notice of the checkpoints to the public, ensuring transparency and fairness in the enforcement process.

While the primary goal of the checkpoint is to apprehend impaired drivers, they also serve as a valuable opportunity for law enforcement officers to engage with the community for education and raising awareness about the dangers of impaired driving. This community outreach aspect of DUI checkpoints helps to foster a sense of trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the public.

If you plan to drink or use anything that could impair your ability to drive, please don’t get behind the wheel. It’s not worth the risk to yourself, your loved ones, or others on the road. Every life lost to impaired driving is a tragedy that can be prevented. Let’s all do our part to keep our community safe.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
