Reminder on California’s New Daylighting Law
The new Daylighting Law (AB 413), which went into effect at the beginning of 2024, makes it illegal to park within 20 feet of the approach of any marked or unmarked crosswalk (or 15 feet of the approach at crosswalks where a curb extension is present), even without red curb painting or parking restriction signs. The goal of the new law is to improve the safety of all roadway users by increasing overall visibility at intersections. Removing the obstruction of parked vehicles at the intersection approaches will allow drivers to have a clear view of pedestrians or bicyclists waiting to cross the street while at the same time allowing pedestrians or bicyclists to see approaching traffic without having to step into the intersection to see past a parked vehicle. Forty states currently have similar laws in place. California's citation enforcement starts on January 1, 2025. However, there’s no reason not to start leaving at least 20 feet (or the length of one large car) between your car and a marked/unmarked crosswalk.
