Debris Removal Efforts Continue in McDowell County
As of December 19, 2024, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has reported the collection of 32,777.15 cubic yards of debris and 11,052.91 tons of soil as part of ongoing debris removal efforts in McDowell County. Current operations include 4 crews in Old Fort with 47 dump trucks and 1 crew in North Cove with 4 dump trucks for mud, soil, and silt. Additionally, ROW truck allocations include 1 self-loader in Crooked Creek, 1 in Old Fort, 2 in Glenwood, 1 in Marion, and 2 in Nebo. Tree and debris separation crews are actively working in Crooked Creek, Glenwood, and Sugar Hill, with each community staffed with 1 tree crew, 1 debris separation crew, and 1 emergency road clearance crew. Emergency Management Conducts Waterway Assessments Following Hurricane Helene
McDowell County Emergency Management, in collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), has conducted comprehensive waterway assessments to identify hazardous debris in and along our rivers and streams. All major waterways in the county have been evaluated. Work continues to identify debris in tributaries. This program, administered under the guidance of FEMA and USACE, involves a meticulous process to assess and determine eligibility for removal, ensuring compliance with federal guidelines. The devastation caused by Hurricane Helene generated significant debris impacting both public and private properties across McDowell County. We recognize that the removal process will be extensive and appreciate the continued patience and cooperation of our community as we work together to restore and rehabilitate our waterways and neighborhoods. McDowell County Residents Encouraged to Report Property Damage Following Hurricane Helene
Residents with damaged or demolished vehicles, personal property, or real property due to Hurricane Helene are encouraged to update the McDowell County Tax Assessor's Office. To report damage, please visit www.mcdowellgov.com/helene and click on the designated link. This includes reporting damage to cars, trucks, boats, campers, utility trailers, mobile homes, houses, and outbuildings. A member of the tax team will follow up with you to assist with your report. Your prompt update will help ensure accurate records and support recovery efforts.
