City of Sonora Golf Cart Ordinance Implementation

Greetings,

In 2024, the City of Sonora adopted an ordinance governing the permitting and operation of golf carts within the city limits. Effective January 1, 2025, the City of Sonora will begin implementing this ordinance. Below is important information to help you comply with the new requirements.

Required Equipment for Golf Carts:

To be eligible for a permit, your golf cart must meet the following equipment standards:

• Headlights
• Reflectors
• Seatbelts
• A slow-moving vehicle emblem
• Tail lamps
• Parking brakes
• A rear-view mirror

Additionally:

• The golf cart must be classified as a slow-moving vehicle.
• Engine modifications or excessive body modifications are prohibited.
• UTVs and ATVs do not qualify for this permit.

Inspection and Registration Process:

1. Contact the City of Sonora at 325-387-2558 to schedule an inspection.
2. Inspection forms are available for pickup at City Hall.
3. Once your inspection is complete, bring the inspection form to City Hall for verification.
4. A $50 registration fee will be required.
5. After verification, you will receive a golf cart license plate, which must be affixed to the rear of your golf cart.

Additional Requirements:

Applicants must provide proof of liability insurance for the registered golf cart.

Safety Rules:

The following rules, strictly enforced by the Sonora Police Department, are in place to ensure the safety of all residents:

1. Golf carts are considered motor vehicles, and most traffic laws apply, including seatbelt, open container, and DWI regulations.

2. Operators must have a valid driver’s license or operator’s permit.

3. Golf carts must yield to faster-moving vehicles and remain on the right side of the roadway.

4. Golf carts are not permitted on:

• Public sidewalks
• Pedestrian walkways
• Playgrounds
• Public parks
• School grounds
• Public recreation areas not designed for motor vehicles

5. All occupants must remain seated in designated seats while the cart is in motion. Passengers may not ride on laps.
