Twentynine Palms Woman Arrested for Petty Theft when Apprehended with Stolen Mail in Her Possession

SUSPECT(S): Lisa Alanis, 63-years-old, resident of Twentynine Palms
SUMMARY: On November 5, 2024, California voters passed Proposition 36 titled “The Homelessness, Drug Addiction and Theft Reduction Act.” The proposition took effect on December 18, 2024, and reforms multiple laws from Proposition 47, which have been responsible for increasing homelessness, drug addiction and theft. Proposition 36 includes several new Penal and Health and Safety Codes that deputies will be able to apply during arrests when appropriate. These new charges can carry enhanced sentencing, as well as prevent offenders from being cite released prior to their court appearance. The following is an arrest where Proposition 36 is applied:
On Monday, December 30, 2024, deputies from the Morongo Basin Station arrested an individual in connection with mail theft in the city of Twentynine Palms. The incident began when deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 73000 block of Sunnyslope Drive following a mail theft report.
At approximately 3:33 p.m., a witness called 911 to report a woman seen stealing mail from multiple mailboxes. At approximately 3:36 p.m., deputies arrived at the scene and searched for the suspect.
During the search, deputies located a female matching the description provided. The female was identified as Lisa Alanis and was found near the intersection of Sunnyslope Drive and Bagley Avenue. After detaining Alanis, deputies discovered a brown box in her possession containing several pieces of mail, including personal identifying information and bank statements of others. Further investigation led deputies to a nearby victim who saw Alanis at her mailbox shortly before the deputies arrived.
Some of the mail was returned to the victims, while the remaining mail was returned to the Post Office. Alanis was arrested for PC 666.1 -petty theft with priors and was transported to the Morongo Basin jail for booking. The case will be forwarded to the District Attorney's Office for review and filing.
