Freezing Weather is in the Forecast for Next Week
Freezing weather is in the forecast next week for North Texas. Follow the suggestions below to prepare your home ahead of the cold front and keep a printed copy of our tip sheet in case you lose power or experience a burst pipe in your home.
Before a freeze:
- Insulate outside faucets with a weather-proof covering. (Fitted coverings are available for purchase at most home improvement stores.)
- Disconnect garden hoses from outside faucets.
- Wrap exposed pipes inside and outside your home.
- Inspect fire sprinkler systems annually.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks that are adjacent to outside walls.
- If temperatures are expected to dip to 28 degrees or colder for at least 4 hours, drip both cold and hot water faucets slowly.
- If your washing machine is in an unheated room, or if you lose power, shut off water to the machine.
- If ice or snow accumulates around your gas meter, sweep it away with a broom or brush. Never kick or chip snow and ice away with a hard object.
- Important note: if you plan to use a portable generator, follow all safety measures, including keeping the generator outdoors and away from all doors, windows and vents. Always ensure fireplaces and other heat sources are properly ventilated.
- Close fireplace dampers when not in use.
- Don’t use the pool heater. Run your pool pump during the coldest part of the day.
- Only run your clothes washer, clothes dryer and dishwasher with a full load.
- Lower your water heater temperature.
- Reduce shower and bath time.
- Lower your thermostat to 68 degrees during the day.
- After hours or during an inclement weather closure, call 972-886- 4229.
- During normal business hours, call Town Hall at 972-562-0522, and press 5.
