Palm Springs Man and Woman Arrested for Theft after Caught Shoplifting from Local Business

DATE/TIME: January 6, 2025 / 12:08 p.m. 

INCIDENT: PC 666.1(a)(1) - Petty Theft with Prior Convictions

LOCATION: 58000 block of Twentynine Palms Highway, Yucca Valley

SUSPECT(S): Sultan Hamid, 43-year-old male resident of Palm Springs
                        Amber Meyers, 43-year-old female resident of Palm Springs

VICTIM(S): Wal-Mart Yucca Valley


SUMMARY: On November 5, 2024, California voters passed Proposition 36 titled “The Homelessness, Drug Addiction and Theft Reduction Act.” The proposition took effect on December 18, 2024, and reforms multiple laws from Proposition 47, which have been responsible for increasing homelessness, drug addiction and theft. Proposition 36 includes several new Penal and Health and Safety Codes that deputies will be able to apply during arrests when appropriate. These new charges can carry enhanced sentencing, as well as prevent offenders from being cite released prior to their court appearance. The following is an arrest where Proposition 36 is applied:

On Monday, January 6, 2025, Yucca Valley deputies were dispatched to Wal-Mart for a report of a theft of approximately $300 in merchandise. Deputies located Sultan Hamid and Amber Meyers with the stolen property in their possession as they fled in a vehicle westbound on Twentynine Palms Highway.

Hamid was found to have prior convictions for theft, and was placed under arrest for violation of PC 666.1(a)(1) - Petty Theft with Prior Convictions. He was booked at the Morongo Basin Jail and is being held in lieu of $30,000 bail. Meyers was arrested for violation of PC 459.5(a) - Shoplifting, and was booked at the Morongo Basin Jail pending citation release.
