On Sunday, December 22, 2024, at approximately 1:52 a.m., our Dispatch center received calls regarding a fight in front of the New Yorker restaurant downtown. Officers arrived on the scene and found the victim, who had been knocked unconscious and was severely injured because of the altercation. The suspect in the assault fled the area on foot. As a result of this incident, the victim was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for serious injuries.
Following the incident, officers were able to review City of Petaluma video surveillance cameras in the downtown area and a witness provided video of the assault. A press release was issued on our platforms requesting the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect.
We thankfully received numerous calls providing tips on the identity of the suspect. Officers were able identify the suspect as William Werner (30, Petaluma). A felony warrant for assault with a deadly weapon and battery causing serious bodily injury was issued for Werner who was ultimately arrested, Wednesday, January 7 by our Community Impact Response Team (CIRT). Werner was booked into Sonoma County Jail later that day without further incident.
Thank you to the numerous community members who provided tips that played a crucial role in advancing the investigation. We are grateful for our partnership with the public that allows safety to continue in Petaluma.
