FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RUTHERFORD COUNTY WINTER STORM BRIEFING January 10, 2025 – 11:00 AM A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for all of the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia from 7 AM Friday to 7 AM Saturday. ________________________________________ What to Expect Timing • Friday Morning: Snow begins, possibly mixed with sleet. • 11:00 AM–1:00 PM Friday: Snow arrives in Rutherford County. • Friday Evening: Snow changes to a wintry mix; freezing rain develops south of I-85. Accumulations • Snow/Sleet: o Rutherford County: Estimated 2–4 inches of snow. o Highest amounts: Southern and northern NC mountains. o Lighter amounts: Areas south of I-85. • Ice: o North of I-85: 0.01”–0.1” o South of I-85: 0.15”–0.30”, with higher amounts possible. ________________________________________ Key Hazards 1. Road Conditions: Roads will be treacherous and impassable Friday evening. Black ice likely Saturday and Sunday nights. 2. Power Outages: Heavy ice on trees and power lines may cause widespread outages. 3. Winds: Light winds Friday; gusty Saturday morning could worsen conditions. 4. Temperatures: Overnight lows in the teens/20s will cause refreezing on roads. ________________________________________ Safety Guidance 1. Stay Off Roads: Travel is strongly discouraged.
