Thefts from motor vehicles - Huron Township
Over the past couple of weeks, we have taken reports on an increased number of thefts occurring during the overnight hours within Huron Township. On January 8, 2025, we sent out multiple alerts meant as reminders for residents to lock their vehicles and residences. Intentionally, at that time, we did not publish the exact areas where the thefts occurred because we wanted the entire community to remain vigilant. While we had reports made regarding some of the thefts in some areas, we are confident that many of the thefts were not reported by residents mostly based on the minimal amount of property taken. With that said, the intent was to not limit the assistance of our community in providing information based on a small percentage of incidents that were reported.
We want to be clear about one thing. Thefts are NOT the fault of those that are victimized. They are the clear fault of thieves who rely on easy and quick targets. No community is immune from this type of theft, but every alert or social media post we release is simply meant to educate our community and ask them to be vigilant and report suspicious activity immediately. Our hope is to spread the message to lock our vehicles and residences so well it causes thieves to pack up and move along!
Since December 9th, we have had (14) reported larcenies involving motor vehicles. Again, we realized that there are more that have gone unreported. All (14) reported larcenies involved unlocked vehicles.
Please feel free to share this post. Please continue to lock and secure your vehicles and residences and take valuable items inside. Even with locked vehicles, we always recommend taking garage door openers out of your vehicle and to lock interior doors that lead from an attached garage into your residence.
