Snow Emergency Declaration 
SNOW EMERGENCY DECLARATION
A Snow Emergency is hereby declared in the Town of Yorktown effective as of 2:00 P.M. on January 19, 2025.
This Snow Emergency has been declared due to a severe snow storm that may cause extremely hazardous conditions on the roadways and throughout the entire town.
This situation threatens the public safety.
This Snow Emergency will remain in effect until 2:00 P.M. on January 20, 2025 or if it is rescinded by a subsequent order.
As the Town Supervisor of the Town of Yorktown, I, Edward A. Lachterman exercise the authority given me under Section 24 of the New York State Executive Law to preserve the public safety and hereby render all required and available assistance vital to the security, well-being, and health of the citizens of the Town of Yorktown.
I hereby direct all departments and agencies of the Town of Yorktown to take whatever steps necessary to protect life and property, public infrastructure, and provide such emergency assistance deemed necessary.

The Town Code for snow emergencies in Yorktown, New York is 275-14. A snow emergency is declared when the town anticipates a significant amount of snow or ice, which can make it difficult to travel safely. The declaration helps the town’s highway department and emergency services respond.
During a Snow Emergency:
Avoid Driving: only travel for essential reasons.
Moved Parked Cars: parked cars can be ticketed and towed to allow for snow removal.
Keep Fire Hydrants Clear: the owner and occupant of real estate next to a fire hydrant must keep a two-foot path clear of snow and ice.
Remove Snow and Ice: remove snow and ice from sidewalks, especially at hose near commercial establishments and parking lots.
Please Note: this is NOT a State of Emergency. Motorist are allowed to legally travel on roadways. It is recommended that residents not travel due to an expected snow storm that may cause extremely hazardous conditions on the roadways and throughout the entire town.

Yorktown Town Code
§ 275-14 Removal and storage of vehicles; charges.
Any vehicle parked or abandoned on a public highway in the Town of Yorktown during a snowstorm, flood, fire or other public emergency which affects that portion of the public highway upon which said vehicle is parked or abandoned may be removed by or under the direction of the Chief of Police or the Superintendent of Highways and stored in any suitable place. The Chief of Police and the Superintendent of Highways are authorized to use Town equipment, if available, and if not are authorized to lease from others tow trucks and other necessary equipment required for such purpose. Such vehicles shall be released only to the owner or his duly authorized agent upon the production of proof of ownership satisfactory to the Town Attorney and upon payment of the reasonable expenses and charges for such removal or storage. Charges for such removal shall not exceed $25 and storage charges shall not exceed $5 per day. A report of the removal and the disposition of such vehicle shall be made to the Police Department, and it shall be the duty of the Police Department to ascertain and to notify him of the removal and disposition of such vehicle and of the amount which will be required to redeem the same. The reasonable charges for the use and rental of Town equipment and the equipment of others shall be paid to the Town Clerk by the owner or his agent and shall be deposited to the credit of the appropriate Town account.
