SHOOTING LEADS TO ARREST

On January 19, 2025, at approximately 1:40 PM, the Simi Valley Police Department (SVPD) Dispatch received a report of 4-5 gunshots heard in the vicinity of 1550 Rory Lane, Unit #37. The reporting party also noted the sound of arguing coming from the unit.

While officers were en route, an adult male contacted Dispatch, identifying himself as the resident of Unit #37. He reported that his adult son, later identified as Jason Dery, was discharging an assault-type weapon inside the residence and firing toward neighboring homes. Upon arrival, officers determined the reporting party had been locked out of the residence by the suspect.

Officers secured the area and contained the mobile home; however, the suspect refused to exit. The father informed officers that his son had access to multiple firearms within the residence.

Given the severity of the situation, the SVPD SWAT Team was activated, with support from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO) SWAT Team, the Crisis Negotiation Team, Tactical Dispatch, and SVPD Detectives. Negotiations with the suspect spanned several hours but were ultimately unsuccessful. During this time, the suspect made statements suggesting the possible presence of bomb-making materials in the residence, prompting the activation of the VCSO Bomb Squad.

After multiple failed attempts at negotiation, SWAT deployed CS gas into the residence, compelling the suspect to surrender without further incident. Upon his surrender, it was discovered that the suspect had sustained a significant self-inflicted laceration to his left arm. Following medical treatment, Jason Dery was transported to the Ventura County Main Jail, where he was booked on charges of:

  • Penal Code 246: Shooting at an inhabited dwelling
  • Penal Code 148: Resisting or delaying arrest

It was later confirmed that no individuals were struck by gunfire during the incident.
