State of California - Daylighting Law (AB 413)

The State of California has recently enacted a new law aimed at enhancing safety for both pedestrians and drivers. Known as the Daylighting Law (AB 413), this legislation came into effect on January 1, 2025. The primary objective of this law is to reduce pedestrian accidents by improving visibility at intersections and crosswalks, allowing more time for drivers and pedestrians to see each other.

Under the new regulations, parking within 20 feet of a marked or unmarked crosswalk or 15 feet of any crosswalk with a curb extension is now considered a violation of the California Vehicle Code. This law only applies to the side of the road where vehicles are approaching the crosswalk.

In light of this new regulation, City staff will be conducting evaluations of intersections and parking spaces that currently fall within these newly established boundaries.
