Approximately one week ago, the Fairfield Police Department became aware of a planned protest at Travis Air Force Base (TAFB). The organization planning the protest has done this previously and each time has blocked access to the base, including to David Grant Medical Center. Fairfield Police reached out to the group, in advance, in an attempt to facilitate their first amendment right while simultaneously ensuring base operations would not be impacted.
Today, officers met with the protesters in person and were assured there would be no issues. The protest began at 10:00am and ended by 1:00pm. The roadway was never blocked and officers cleared the area once the protesters left.
At 3:06pm, however, Fairfield Police began receiving numerous phone calls that approximately 15 protesters had returned and were blocking the North Gate to TAFB. Additional 911 callers reported that the protesters were throwing rocks at vehicles and numerous people were physically fighting. One vehicle had its windshield broken during the incident. Travis Air Force Base Security Forces requested emergency assistance in order resolve the situation.
Fairfield Police officers immediately responded to the scene and ordered the protesters to disperse. Three protestors refused to do so and were subsequently placed under arrest and transported to Solano County Jail. There were no reported injuries to officers, the public, or protesters.
We would like to thank our law enforcement partners at Vacaville Police Department and 60th Security Forces Squadron for their assistance in bringing this incident to a safe resolution.
