Spread of Fire Stopped by Good Samaritans and Involved Suspect Arrested

INCIDENT: Reckless Fire of Open Land
LOCATION: 10800 block of Cedar Avenue, unincorporated Bloomington
SUSPECT: Melyi Lopez, a 40-year-old female unhoused person who frequents Bloomington
SUMMARY: On Saturday, January 25, 2025, at about 4:13 P.M., Fontana Station deputies responded to a fire in the 10800 block of Cedar Avenue, unincorporated Bloomington. The reporting party reported a female intentionally set part of an open field, near businesses, on fire and fled the area. Good Samaritans quickly put out the fire to prevent it from spreading and the fire department responded to the scene.
From previous contacts, Fontana deputies recognized the suspect was Melyi Lopez, a local unhoused person, who frequents Bloomington. Deputies located Lopez and determined she set the fire. She was arrested for arson and booked into the West Valley Detention Center, where her bail was set at $30,000.00.
