Wilmington Police make arrests in connection with 2019 Cold Case murder, shooting, and shots fired incident:

Wilmington Police have made arrests in connection with a 2019 Cold Case murder, shooting incident and shots fired incident.

On December 28, 2019, at approximately 5:36 p.m., members of the Uniformed Services Division responded to the 1300 block of East 29th Street in reference to a shooting incident. Upon arrival, police located a gunshot victim – 67-year-old James Pinkett – who later succumbed to his injuries. The case was assigned to Detective Mackenzie Kirlin of the Criminal Investigations Division.

The investigation continued, and the efforts of the Cold Case Unit – including Cold Case Investigator Steven Rizzo and Detective Devon Jones – led to the identification of 22-year-old Dion Young and 22-year-old Ameer Dunn as suspects.

Young was also identified as a suspect in connection with two other incidents, including a shooting incident that took place on December 24, 2019, at approximately 7:44 p.m. in the 500 block of New Castle Avenue. Responding officers located a 20-year-old male gunshot victim, who was transported to the hospital in stable condition. The second incident, which took place on December 26, 2019 at approximately 8:41 p.m., involved police responding to a shots fired incident with no injuries that took place in the 500 block of E. 9th Street Street. Those cases were assigned to Detective Brendan Wham.

On December 16, 2024, these cases were presented to the New Castle County Grand Jury, and an indictment was returned for Young and Dunn.

Young is currently committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on an unrelated matter. Dunn was taken into custody in Houston, TX and was extradited to Delaware on January 23, 2025.

Dion Young has been charged with the following offenses:

  • Murder (First Degree)
  • Attempted Murder (First Degree) – Six Counts
  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony – Eleven Counts
  • Conspiracy (First Degree) – Two Counts
  • Reckless Endangering (First Degree) – Four Counts
  • Conspiracy (Second Degree) – Three Counts
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited – Three Counts
  • Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony – Two Counts
  • Receiving Stolen Property Over $1,500
He was arraigned in New Castle County Superior Court and remains committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $1,500,000 cash-only bail.

Ameer Dunn has been charged with the following offenses:
  • Murder (First Degree)
  • Attempted Murder (First Degree) – Three Counts
  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony – Seven Counts
  • Conspiracy (First Degree)
  • Conspiracy (Second Degree) – Two Counts
  • Reckless Endangering (First Degree) – Three Counts
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited
  • Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony
  • Receiving Stolen Property Over $1,500
He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $866,000 cash-only bail.
