California Crosswalk Daylighting Law Takes Effect
Beverly Hills, Calif. – The Beverly Hills Police Department (BHPD) would like to remind everyone about California Assembly Bill 413, commonly known as the “Crosswalk Daylighting” law, which went into effect throughout the state on January 1, 2024. This law aims to enhance pedestrian safety by improving visibility at intersections.
This law prohibits parking:
This law prohibits parking:
- Within 20 feet of any marked or unmarked crosswalk.
- Within 15 feet of crosswalks with curb extensions (bulb-outs).
This new law was enacted to address California's disproportionately high pedestrian fatality rates. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, the state records the highest number of pedestrian deaths in the nation, approximately 25% above the national average.
Throughout 2024, only warnings were issued for violations to allow time for public education and awareness. However, as of January 1, 2025, citations are now being issued for non-compliance.
Residents are reminded to consider this new law when parking near intersections. Similar to restrictions near fire hydrants and other no-parking zones, the law does not require the presence of posted signs or painted red curbs to enforce compliance. To view the full text of AB 413, the public can visit the official California Legislative Information website.
To report violations in the City of Beverly Hills, please call BHPD Parking Dispatch at 310-550-4875.
