Deputy Observes Store Clerk Chasing Theft Suspect; Suspect Arrested and Booked at Local Jail

DATE/TIME: February 2, 2025 / 9:35 p.m.

INCIDENT: Petty Theft with Two or more Prior Convictions, Parole Violation

LOCATION: Main Street / C Avenue, Hesperia

SUSPECT(S): Steven Legleiter, 37-year-old, Transient of Hesperia

SUMMARY: On November 5, 2024, California voters passed Proposition 36 titled “The Homelessness, Drug Addiction and Theft Reduction Act.” The proposition took effect on December 18, 2024, and reforms multiple laws from Proposition 47, which have been responsible for increasing homelessness, drug addiction and theft. Proposition 36 includes several new Penal and Health and Safety Codes that deputies will be able to apply during arrests when appropriate. These new charges can carry enhanced sentencing, as well as prevent offenders from being cite released prior to their court appearance. The following is an arrest where Proposition 36 is applied:

On February 2, 2025, at approximately 9:35 p.m. Deputy Steuerwald observed a store clerk running out of a local business, chasing the suspect. Deputy Steuerwald made contact with the store clerk along with the suspect and discovered the suspect stole a pack of cigarettes.

The suspect, identified as Steven Legleiter, 37-year-old transient of Hesperia, was taken into custody. A records check was conducted and determined Legleiter had several prior convictions for theft.

Legleiter was arrested and booked into the High Desert Detention Center for PC666.1 (a)(1) Petty Theft with Two or more Prior Convictions and a Violation of Parole.
