Post Eaton Fire – Debris Flow Preparations Update

Post-fire debris flows that are expected to affect several areas within the City of Sierra Madre. You may notice a number of debris flow mitigation best management practices (BMPs) throughout the City. These include structural protections such as K-rails, rail and timber wall maintenance, and sandbag structure and distribution. BMPs also include inspection and maintenance of catch basins (also referred to as “storm drains”), debris basins, and open channels.
To date, Sierra Madre Public Works has installed K-rails, and has both installed and distributed sandbags in an effort to protect the community.

It is important to know that Public Works will continue to manage BMP mitigation work as needed.  We are working with State and County entities to keep up with all developing planning efforts.

Please understand that future forecasts may call for evacuations.  We urge you to check the resources below to become familiar with the zone that you are in, and sign up for various alerts.  In addition, the nature of debris-flows may close streets for a period.  Now is the time to prepare and ensure your home is ready for a prolonged shelter-in-place scenario.

Please take advantage of the resources listed below as we enter this multi-year and collaborative effort to protect the community.
