Deputy Conducts Traffic Stop & Locates Suspected Methamphetamine in Possession of Man with Previous Drug Convictions

INCIDENT: Possession of a Controlled Substance with Two or More Prior Convictions and Possession of a Controlled Substance for Sale
LOCATION: Choiceana Avenue / Vine Street, Hesperia
SUSPECT(S): Kirk Thibodeaux, 60-year-old transient of Lucerne Valley
SUMMARY: On November 5, 2024, California voters passed Proposition 36 titled “The Homelessness, Drug Addiction and Theft Reduction Act.” The proposition took effect on December 18, 2024, and reforms multiple laws from Proposition 47, which have been responsible for increasing homelessness, drug addiction and theft. Proposition 36 includes several new Penal and Health and Safety Codes that deputies will be able to apply during arrests when appropriate. These new charges can carry enhanced sentencing, as well as prevent offenders from being cite released prior to their court appearance. The following is an arrest where Proposition 36 is applied:
On February 7, 2025, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Deputy Steuerwald with the Hesperia Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with expired registration, in the area of Choiceana Avenue and Vine Street in the city of Hesperia. Deputy Steuerwald contacted the driver identified as Kirk Thibodeaux, 60-year-old transient of Lucerne Valley. Thibodeaux consented to a search of the vehicle, which resulted in suspected methamphetamine, empty bags and a scale being located.
During a records check, Thibodeaux was found to have multiple convictions for drug related charges. Thibodeaux was arrested and booked into the High Desert Detention Center for HS11395(b)(1)- Possession of a Controlled Substance with Two or More Prior Convictions and HS11378- Possession of a Controlled Substance for Sale.
