Due to recent wildfires and resulting burn scars, parts of Los Angeles County are at a heightened risk for mud and rockslides. A strong storm system is forecasted to bring heavy rainfall to the region later this week, increasing the potential for flash flooding, debris flows, and dangerous road conditions. Residents in affected areas should take precautions now to stay safe.  

 

▪️Storm Watch & Potential Hazards

The incoming storm is expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and possible thunderstorms. Rainfall over burn scars can trigger sudden and fast-moving mudslides with little to no warning. Flash flooding may develop quickly, sweeping away people, vehicles, and structures. Debris flows can carry large rocks, trees, and other materials, causing severe damage. Road closures and power outages are possible, and hazardous driving conditions should be expected.  

 

▪️Key Safety Considerations

Stay informed by monitoring weather forecasts and signing up for emergency alerts. Have a family emergency plan in place, including a designated meeting point and evacuation route. Keep essential emergency supplies on hand, such as a battery-powered radio, flashlight, extra batteries, and a first aid kit. Avoid traveling during heavy rainfall, especially in flood-prone or burned areas. Never attempt to cross flooded roads—“Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” Follow all evacuation orders from local authorities immediately.
