Deputies Arrest Suspect Responsible for Theft from Two Local Retailers

DATE/TIME: Wednesday, February 12, 2025 / 11:08 A.M.   

INCIDENT: P.C. 666.1(A)(1)- Petty Theft with Two Prior Convictions, P.C. 4573.6(A)- Bringing Drugs into a Jail, P.C. 76(A)- Threaten Public Official, P.C. 3056- Violation of Parole
 
LOCATION: 15152 Bear Valley Road, Victorville 

SUSPECT(S): Steven Legleiter, 37-year-old Resident of Hesperia


SUMMARY: On November 5, 2024, California voters passed Proposition 36 titled “The Homelessness, Drug Addiction and Theft Reduction Act.” The proposition took effect on December 18, 2024, and reforms multiple laws from Proposition 47, which have been responsible for increasing homelessness, drug addiction and theft. Proposition 36 includes several new Penal and Health and Safety Codes that deputies will be able to apply during arrests when appropriate. These new charges can carry enhanced sentencing, as well as prevent offenders from being cite released prior to their court appearance. The following is an arrest where Proposition 36 is applied:

On Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at approximately 11:08 a.m., deputies responded to a reported theft at the Skechers store, in Victorville. Deputies conducted an area check and contacted Steven Legleiter. Through investigation, it was discovered Legleiter stole various items from Skechers, as well as Home Depot. Legleiter was taken into custody and transported to the High Desert Detention Center. A jail search on Legleiter revealed a clear plastic bag on his person, containing a suspected controlled substance.

Steven Legleiter was arrested and booked at High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto, for P.C. 666.1(A)(1)- Petty Theft with Two Prior Convictions, P.C. 4573.6(A)- Bringing Drugs into a Jail, P.C. 76(A)- Threaten Public Official, P.C. 3056- Violation of Parole.
