Advisory

Winter Weather Advisory until 06:00PM Saturday

...QUICK BURST OF SNOW THIS AFTERNOON, SNOW AND FREEZING RAIN LATE TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY... .Quick 1-2" of snow expected this afternoon with snowfall rates reaching up to 1"/hour, the highest snow amounts and rates will be in portions of north central into northeast Iowa. The fast snow accumulations will lead to quickly deteriorating road conditions into the evening commute. Winds out of the south gusting to 30-40 mph this afternoon will also lead to blowing and drifting of snow with the greatest impacts on east-west roads and in rural areas. The blowing snow in addition to new snow and high snowfall rates will lead to significant drops in visibility over a short period of time. This first snow event tapers off this evening by around 6pm. Then, the second round of snow arrives after a short break and continues through Saturday. Snow begins initially in northern Iowa late tonight with snow moving south and east with time. In southern Iowa, this second round will have a wintry mix with freezing rain and snow and ice accumulations that reach up to around one tenth of an inch before changing to snow later Saturday. In central to northern Iowa, snow will occur in bands with the highest accumulations within the band (or multiple bands) of snow and may lead to sharp cutoffs in snow amounts outside of these bands, though uncertainty remains on where these bands may occur. Light snow or flurries continue beyond the end of the bulk of the accumulating snow into Sunday morning.

* WHAT...Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations up to 3 inches with locally higher amounts possible, and ice accumulations up to around one tenth of an inch.

* WHERE...Portions of central into southern Iowa.

* WHEN...From 3 AM to 6 PM CST Saturday.
