HOBOKEN - BOIL WATER ADVISORY - BEGINNING TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18

HOBOKEN, NJ – A boil water advisory has been issued for Hoboken beginning February 18, 2025. In the interest of public health, the boil water advisory was issued due to fluctuations in water pressure caused by efforts to stabilize service in Hoboken after a water main break at 18th Street & Jersey Avenue in neighboring Jersey City.

The boil water order is in effect until further notice. Veolia will notify Hoboken customers when the order is lifted. Customers should boil their water before using it for drinking or cooking purposes.

Customers, even if their water is filtered at home, must boil their water for one minute and allow it to cool for the following uses: drinking, cooking, baking, washing dishes, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets or other consumption.

This advisory is in effect due to fluctuations of water pressure in the system during brought on by emergency repairs. Low water pressure could potentially allow for the presence of harmful microbes in the system. Microbes in drinking water can cause illness and could pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems. Water does not have to be boiled for showering or washing clothes.

Veolia will also continue to collect samples and monitor water quality in the distribution system. The company will work with the DEP to inform residents when the boil water is lifted.

NJDEP Issues Boil Water Advisory for Hoboken

DRINKING WATER WARNING

Boil Water Advisory

For Customers of Hoboken Water Utility

BOIL WATER BEFORE USING

Hoboken Water Utility is providing notification that a water main break has occurred at 18th Street and Jersey Avenue, in Jersey City which has caused customers within our service area to experience a significant loss of pressure or be without water. A potential or actual threat to the quality of water being provided to you currently exists.

Effective February 18, the NJDEP are implementing a Boil Water Advisory until testing of the water supply is deemed satisfactory.

What should I do? What does this mean?

Effective immediately and until further notice, customers within Hoboken City are instructed to bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute and allow the tap water to cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking; preparing foods; mixing baby formula, food, juices or drinks; washing vegetables and fruit; cooking; making ice; brushing teeth; and washing dishes until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.

The following measures are also recommended:

• Throw away uncooked food or beverages or ice cubes made with tap water during the day of the advisory;

• Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking;

• Do not swallow water while showering or bathing;

• Rinse hand-washed dishes with a diluted bleach solution (one tablespoon of household bleach per gallon of tap water) or clean your dishes in a dishwasher using the hot wash cycle and dry cycle;

• Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water; most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms;

• Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries;

• Provide pets with drinking water that has been boiled (and cooled).

Please continue to boil your water or use bottled water until you are notified that the water quality is satisfactory. This advisory will remain in effect until repairs are completed and testing shows the water quality to be safe.

We are working as quickly as possible to restore your water quality. Thank you for your patience.
