Boil Water Advisory remains in effect; Water testing today; Jersey Ave. open
Following the completion of repairs to a 36-inch water main near the intersection of Jersey Avenue and 18th Street in Jersey City last night, full water pressure has been restored to Hoboken’s water system. With repairs complete, Jersey Avenue is now fully open in both directions.
Today, Veolia will be collecting water samples for testing in accordance with regulatory guidelines. It takes a minimum of 24 hours for the tests to be completed. Once results are available, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) will review the results and determine if the Boil Water Advisory can be lifted. Hoboken will remain under a boil water advisory until that time.
Veolia will continue to flush certain fire hydrants as needed, possibly into the daytime hours on Thursday, to assist with water pressure stabilization. Despite these efforts, there may still be fluctuations in water pressure, which can cause future water main breaks as the system stabilizes.
Residents who experience discoloration and possible sediment should flush taps with cold water until it runs clear.
Residents and businesses should boil their water for at least one minute for the following:
- Washing dishes
- Drinking
- Cooking
- Baking
- Making ice cubes
- Taking medication
- Brushing teeth
- Washing food
- Mixing baby formula or food
- Mixing juices or drinks
- Feeding pets
- all other consumption
Water does not have to be boiled for showering or washing clothes.
