Important Update: Public Right-of-Way Debris Removal Deadline is March 1st, 2025
For public right-of-way debris removal, please have your storm debris out on the public right-of-way by March 1, 2025. Trucks will be making final passes and getting your debris out by this date guarantees it will be picked up. If you miss this deadline or need help with removing debris, free debris removal is available through the Private Property Debris Removal Program. Call McDowell County's Helene Hotline at 828-652-3241.

Disaster Energy and Rental Assistance Programs Are Still Available for Hurricane Helene Survivors

North Carolina has launched Disaster Energy Assistance and Emergency Rental Assistance programs to support households impacted by Hurricane Helene. Eligible residents can apply for help with utility bills, furnace repairs, heating costs, and one-time rent payments to prevent eviction. To qualify, households must meet income guidelines and demonstrate disaster-related losses. Applications are accepted in person at the McDowell County DSS (145 E. Court St, Marion) or by phone at (828) 652-3355. Funds are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, with direct payments made to landlords for rental assistance.

Crews Continue Waterway Cleanup in McDowell Following Hurricane Helene

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and AshBritt Inc. continue cleaning up waterways in McDowell County as part of ongoing recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene. Crews are actively removing storm-related debris from local rivers and streams to reduce flood risks and restore natural water flow. Residents may see crews working in affected areas over the coming weeks. We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation as these critical recovery efforts continue.

The Helene Hotline (828-652-3241) is available 24/7 to help the public navigate storm recovery resources. Staff can assist with applications for hazard mitigation grants, debris removal, and damage reporting. In-person support for these programs is also available at McDowell County Emergency Services Headquarters at 129 Barnes Rd. Marion, NC. Call the hotline for guidance and support as we work together to recover.
