Police Arrest Newark Woman for False Report of Package Theft

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr. reports the arrest of Joy Rodriguez, 45, of Newark, for theft by deception in connection with an incident of false reporting of package theft that occurred on Friday, February 14, 2025.

Ms. Rodriguez reported to Newark Police that her delivered package had been stolen from her North Ward residence after it was delivered to a mailroom in her building at approximately 3:05 p.m.

Detectives investigating this incident reviewed the building’s surveillance camera footage. They observed Ms. Rodriguez picking up the package, concealing it, and taking a picture to photograph the location as if the package had been taken or never delivered. She is then seen returning to her apartment with her package, which was valued at approximately $247.62. Rodriguez attempted to file a claim with Amazon’s customer service department but was advised that a police report was needed to begin the process.

Due to this investigation, Ms. Rodriguez was arrested on February 25, 2025. She faces charges of theft by deception, forgery, false swearing, evidence tampering with fabrication, and false reports to law enforcement.

These charges are merely accusations. Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. #newarknj #publicsafety #police #community #partnership #newjersey #cops
