Incident:                      Local Resident Cited for Firearm Violation Under Municipal Safety Ordinance
Occurred Date :           March 2nd, 2025
Occurred Time:           6:15 PM
Location:                     Culpepper Drive, Petaluma
Suspect:                       Peter Dada (50-year-old Petaluma Resident)

Incident Summary

On 3/2/2025, at 6:15 PM, officers conducted a probation search at a residence of a known offender who is on active felony probation. The Petaluma Police Department diligently monitors probationers within our jurisdiction and routinely conducts probation compliance checks to ensure compliance.

Upon initial contact at the residence the known offender, additional adult tenants, and a minor family member under the age of fourteen were contacted. During a search of the residence a shotgun was located in a closet of a tenant who was not the known offender. The firearm was not stored in a locked container or disabled with a locking device leaving it accessible to “unauthorized users” such as the minor.

In December of 2022, the Petaluma City Council unanimously approved the ordinance which requires safe storage of all firearms in homes and vehicles (Petaluma Municipal Code Section 10.56.010). Firearms must be stored in a locked container or disabled with a locking device that is inaccessible to  unauthorized users. Additionally, gun owners must report a lost or stolen firearm within two days to the Petaluma Police Department.

The ordinance was enacted as an effort to increase safety and eliminate accidental shootings. Petaluma became the first city in Sonoma County to enact the law and joined 20-plus other cities in California which have similar ordinances enacting firearm storage and or lock requirements.

The tenant, identified as Peter Dada, was arrested and cited to appear in court for the improper storage of the firearm and the firearm was seized as evidence.

The Petaluma Police Department has gun locks available for free as part of the city's partnership with Project Child Safe. Residents can pick one up from the police department, 969 Petaluma Blvd. North, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Thursday.
