South Brunswick High School Lockdown Details
South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond Hayducka and South Brunswick School District Superintendent Scott Feder detailed the events that led to South Brunswick High School being placed on lockdown this afternoon.
At 2:15 PM a South Brunswick High School staff member reported that two students had reported that another student had made threatening statements and had a knife. School administration and South Brunswick School Resource Officer Detective Scott Bucca immediately placed the school on lockdown. Within minutes a dozen South Brunswick officers responded to the school and began a systematic search of the school. At the same time, Detective Bucca along with other detectives interviewed the staff member and tracked down the students who had been threatened. Upon speaking with the students, Detective Bucca recognized the suspect student’s description. Several officers and Detective Bucca then located the suspect in a classroom. A search recovered a folding knife. The 17-year-old juvenile suspect was placed under arrest and transported to South Brunswick Police Headquarters.
The school lockdown was lifted at 2:50 PM. There were no injuries in the incident.
The juvenile is being charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, and terroristic threats.
Chief Hayducka credited the swift actions by the school administration and police with resolving the situation. “That situation was evolving rapidly and everyone took action to ensure it did not escalate,” said Chief Hayducka.
South Brunswick Police in coordination with the South Brunswick School District will have an enhanced presence at the school in the coming days to reassure students, staff, parents, and community members.
