SUMMARY: On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, the elderly female victim was contacted by an unknown suspect(s) via telephone. The suspect claimed to work for the United States Treasury Department and demanded that the victim withdraw $30,000 because her money was not safe in her current bank account. The victim complied, withdrew the money from her account, and provided it to an Asian male suspect who arrived at her home.
On Wednesday, February 26, 2025, a suspect involved in the conspiracy called the victim again and demanded more money. The victim then believed it to be a swindling scam and filed a police report.
On Thursday, February 27, 2025, deputies and detectives arranged another $30,000 exchange with the suspect(s). Deputies and detectives coordinated the exchange and claimed the money would be provided in a shoebox. At around 2:43 p.m., investigators conducting surveillance saw the suspect, Haoyang Song, arrive at the victim's home. Song took possession of the shoebox and was immediately arrested by deputies.
Song is believed to be a criminal associate of an organized crime group that targets people through phone scams. He was arrested for grand theft, attempted grand larceny, conspiracy, elder abuse, and theft by false pretenses. Song was booked at West Valley Detention Center. The investigation is continuing to identify other suspects involved in the conspiracy.
